MENTAL HEALTH FACILITY

Designing for populations with mental health issues is crucial for creating inclusive and accessible environments. By prioritizing mental health considerations in design, we can foster spaces that promote well-being and reduce potential triggers for individuals facing mental health challenges. This can contribute to a more empathetic and supportive society.

The Concept

The design concept focuses on cultivating a serene and nurturing environment through the harmonious integration of nature-inspired elements. By strategically incorporating abundant natural sunlight and utilizing soft pastel colors, we aim to create a space that promotes calmness and emotional well-being. The architecture will prioritize expansive windows and skylights to maximize daylight exposure, enhancing mood and circadian rhythms among patients. Interior spaces will feature gentle hues of blues, greens, and earth tones, complemented by natural textures and materials to evoke a sense of tranquility and connection to the outdoors. Ultimately, our design seeks to provide a therapeutic sanctuary where patients can find peace and center themselves amidst a supportive and healing atmosphere.

SPACE PLANNING & PROCESS WORK

I began with several different bubble diagrams as part of my schematic design. Below is the final block diagram I decided to go with after looking at many different layouts. I felt this layout incorporated all of the rooms required while creating a functional flow and seamless transitions. Below is a list of the rooms required in the space and the category under which they fall.

FLOOR PLAN & REFLECTED CEILING PLAN

This floorplan consolidates similar room types within each of the four wings, fostering a cohesive and efficient layout that enhances navigation. This creates a harmonious flow throughout the facility but also maximizes functionality, ensuring a seamless and purposeful use of space.

Activity Room

The design of the Activity Room embraces simplicity while immersing occupants in a tranquil garden ambiance. It features Japanese Silk Tree wallpaper that evokes a serene garden atmosphere, a tree that represents resilience in Japanese culture, a quality that is essential in fostering mental well-being. Butterfly decals flutter among the leaves, enhancing the rooms ambience, aiming to transport individuals into a peaceful garden oasis.

Group Therapy Room

Just like with the Activity Room, I chose finishes to, once again, create a calm and relaxed environment.
